The Wellington 5K, 10-Miler and Tower Challenge starts at 7 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, the morning clocks fall back. Fees, the route and the charity it benefits.
The Wellington 5K, 10-Miler and Tower Challenge runs Sunday, Nov. 1. The 10-mile race starts at 7 a.m. and the 5K at 7:20 a.m.
The Wellington Runners Club hosts the race. It is in its 21st year, according to the race’s registration page on RunSignup. Proceeds benefit the Kids Cancer Foundation and other local charities, the club said.
The race falls on the morning daylight saving time ends. Clocks go back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The 7 a.m. start is on the new time, so set the alarm with that in mind.
The three races and what they cost
The club lists these fees on its event page. Each also carries a RunSignup processing fee.
| Race | Start | Race fee | Sign-up fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-Miler Tower Challenge | 7 a.m. | $85 | $6.80 |
| 10-Miler | 7 a.m. | $75 | $6.20 |
| 5K | 7:20 a.m. | $40 | $4.10 |
Online registration stays open until a few minutes after each start. The 10-mile races close at 7:05 a.m. and the 5K at 7:25 a.m., the event page says. On Sunday evening it showed five places left in the Tower Challenge.
The route
The village’s calendar entry puts the start and finish at Tiger Shark Cove Park, 13800 Greenbriar Blvd. The club’s own website says the same. The RunSignup page names the Wellington Dog Park on Greenbriar Boulevard instead, so check the race page before you go.
- 5K: along the path on Greenbriar Boulevard and into the start of the Wellington Environmental Preserve.
- 10-Miler: through the preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat on Flying Cow Road, and through the Aero Club section of the village. The club describes a mix of paved path, shell rock road and boardwalk across the wetland.
- Tower Challenge: the 10-mile course, plus a climb up and down the preserve’s observation tower at about mile 6.
There will be water and Gatorade along the 10-mile course, the club said.
The preserve is a 410-acre rainwater storage area with a boardwalk, a paved path and the observation tower. Our parks and trails guide has its hours and what is there on a normal day.
What it means for you
- Running: register online before the start; the Tower Challenge is close to full.
- Watching or cheering: the races start and finish on Greenbriar Boulevard, and the event page lists 10 a.m. as the finish time for all three.
- Driving or riding: expect runners on the Greenbriar Boulevard path, on Flying Cow Road and in the preserve from 7 a.m. to about 10 a.m. Neither the village nor the club has announced a road closure. Check our road work and closures page for anything else that weekend.
Also coming: a ruck march for the food drive
The Wellington Rotary Ruck March and Food Drive starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Village Park, 11700 Pierson Road. It is a family 5K or 2K walk for all fitness levels, according to the village’s calendar.
Each walker carries a backpack holding at least 10 pounds of nonperishable food, or wears a weighted vest. The food goes to the village’s annual food drive. Strollers are welcome; pets are not. Sign up on the ruck march page on RunSignup.
More for the coming weekends is on our things to do this weekend page.
